We are no strangers to egg carton crafts. Yes, we do hoard the carriers because you never know when you will want to make an egg carton caterpillar craft, butterfly, or DIY bird mask.
What age is this craft for?
This project can be made by any child of any age, especially preschoolers. They can choose the paint colors and all details of their flower craft.

Adult assistance will probably be needed when cutting the egg carton and gluing. We used a hot glue gun to attach the craft-stick stem to the pipe-cleaner leaf.

Tips For Cutting The Egg Carton

- Flipping the cardboard carrier made it easier to cut.
- You may have to trim the edges of your flower petals.
- Cardboard egg cartons will be easier to work with instead of styrofoam (and better for the environment, too)
How To Make An Easy Egg Carton Flower With Kids
BEFORE YOU BEGIN – An adult should cut the cardboard egg carton so that four spots show. Trim any excess off.

Step 1: Paint The Egg Carton
Use washable tempera paint or craft paint in the colors of your choice to paint the frong and back of the egg carton. You may also want to paint the craft stick that will be the stem. Let fully dry.

Step 2: Hot Glue Craft Stick On The Back
An adult can add a little extra hot glue on top of the stick to try to secure it well.

Step 3: Make A Felt Center
Cut fringe around the circle. This is great to work on fine motor skills. Tell children to make sure they use the “inside of the alligator mouth” of the scissors so they can easily cut the fabric.

Step 4: Attach The Center
Use hot glue to attach the felt. You can push the felt in to get a little more texture like a real flower.

Step 5: Add A Button
Hot glue a button on top of the center of the flower.
Optional: Add A Leaf
Bend a pipe cleaner or use paper to make a leaf shape to attach to your stem.
Alternative Ideas
- FOR THE CENTER – Swap out buttons for recycled bottle caps, colorful pom-poms, or even small fabric scraps for a textured look.
- ADD SPARKLE – Glitter glue or sequins can add a little sparkle, too!
