  1. DRAW A HEART – Sketch a medium to large-sized heart with a marker in the middle of your white paper.
  2. OUTLINE – Use a thicker black marker to outline the drawing. We like to use a chisel tip marker for thicker lines.
  3. CREATE SMALLER SHAPES – Add 5-8 lines inside the heart. Split up the background with at least 6 lines to start. You may make smaller shapes in the negative space as you work.
  4. ADD PATTERNS – For this patterned heart doodle, we only added designs with markers in the background shapes. Repeating lines and patterns is a great way to start.
  5. ADD COLOR – Inside the shapes on the heart, use colored pencils to create fun stained glass looking heart.

Tips

  • Consider coloring in some negative space when creating black-and-white doodles.
  • You can create balance by repeating a similar pattern or design in a different spot.
  • Pick a cohesive color scheme for inside the heart. You can repeat the colors in different sections but do not color two shapes touching each other the same color.
  • Children can practice shading with colored pencils.
