- Look at authentic abstract portraiture with children. Ask questions about the shapes and lines they see.
- Observe how Cubist artists (such as Picasso, Gris, Duchamp, and Braque) show the same subject matter from different angles.
- We love using this book series to read about the life of famous artists with kids.
- Just be careful to review all material before showing it to children. Nudity is often used, and while abstract, you want to ensure you know what you are showing students.
ART TEACHER TIP – Allow children to add unique details, lines and shapes even when following these guides. Using mirrors would also make this a super fun self-portrait project!
#1 Easy Picasso Portrait Drawing Idea
Drawing eyes first on the page can be a great starting point for children. Then, adding a profile line down the middle helps create a simple yet slightly abstract portrait drawing.
#2 Abstract Portrait Drawing
There is no wrong way to draw the eyes. Children can even place them in entirely random places on the page.
#3 Geometric Portrait Idea
This example starts with a more geometric nose. Encourage children to have fun creating!
#4 More Advanced Step-by-Step Drawing Idea
Or you can start the portrait drawing with a basic U-line to help give a place to add your facial features. This example was inspired by some of the famous Cubism portraits with many lines around the eyes.
Tips
- For most of these drawings, starting with the eyes is most straightforward for kids and will get them to draw big on the paper.
- Fill the whole paper with shapes and lines.
- Don’t go overboard with details to start.
- You could also practice contour line drawings by not letting children pick up their pencils or markers.
