  • EASILY CHANGE SUBJECT MATTER– Pick a different artist to be inspired by if you don’t want to use a heart shape.
  • ART HISTORY – Discuss Jim Dine’s heart paintings with children before starting this project.

Jim Dine Facts For Kids and Examples

According to the National Gallery Of Art, Jim Dine was born in 1935 in Cincinnati, Ohio and “has adopted an impressive range of media–painting, performance, drawing, poetry, printmaking, book design, sculpture, photography, and more.”

We love him because his bright-colored heart paintings are easy for kids to talk about, and they relate to his art.

  • WATERCOLOR PAINT – For more vibrant colors, consider using liquid watercolor.
  • OIL PASTELS – This is our favorite student pack of oil pastels.
  • HEAVY DRAWING OR WATERCOLOR PAPER – We use 90 lb. drawing paper for most projects with watercolor paint to save money. Do not attempt this project on plain copy paper.

Tips

  • USE CRAYONS – You can use crayons instead of oil pastels. Just make sure that children press hard enough to get the wax to resist the paint.
  • TEMPERA CAKES – Instead of watercolor paint, add water to tempera cakes for the background.
  • LET THEM EXPERIMENT – This is the perfect art project to let kids explore the materials.
  • CLEAN OIL PASTELS – Show children how to use a paper towel to wipe off oil pastels as they are working. This is the perfect time for young kids to use those old pastels!
  • SIZE OF PAPER – We have done this on 9 x 12″ or even 12″ x 18″ paper. Just make your hearts to size based on the size of the paper.
