Step-By-Step Instructions

Note: We are working from a 1-oz pack of white Model Magic. Even at home, I love buying this large box because it contains 75 individually wrapped packs that last much longer than a larger pack that will dry out. This makes it perfect for small projects.

collage of making a butterfly out of Model Magic.
  1. Rip Model Magic in half.
  2. Use one part and roll 4 equal balls.
  3. Place together and shape like butterfly wings.
  4. Create a body and other details for the wings.
  5. Let the Model Magic dry.
  6. Use a small brush and watercolor paint to add color to your sculpture.
  7. Optional: Add a spray clear coat or carefully brush on Mod Podge when the paint is dry.

Tips

  • Flip your sculpture over to ensure it dries completely.
  • Instead of painting, children can change the color of the Model Magic before sculpting.
  • To display, you can add a hook or create a hole somewhere to hang on a string.
  • We have also added magnets to the back of our creations. If you use it as a magnet, we recommend using several layers of clear coat.
  • If something breaks off, regular glue can put Model Magic back together.
  • Ensure your butterfly is not too thin, or Model Magic or air dry can easily crack.
