Fun Halloween Marshmallow Ghost Stacking Challenge (With A Festive Twist)

I love when my own children are easily entertained on a Fall afternoon. This marshmallow ghost stacking challenge was so easy to set up and provided hands-on entertainment all weekend long!

I love DIY Halloween games, and this stacking challenge (like our eyeball ping pong game) is another example of how simple materials can provide endless fun. We were able to get 11 layers to our tower. How tall can you build yours?

  • CRAFT STICKS – You probably could use regular popsicle sticks, but the wider ones work better.
  • NOT PICTURED – To draw the ghost faces, you will want to use a food-safe marker.
  • CANDY PUMPKINS – These are optional, but they add a fun stacking challenge.
  • MARSHMALLOWS – Large or jumbo marshmallows work the best.

You can get the full list of supplies in the printable how-to card at the end of the post.

How much of each supply will you need?

We bought one bag of marshmallows, one bag of pumpkin candies, and 1 50-pack of jumbo sticks. This was the right amount for two kids to build towers. Buy more supplies if you are having more kids and building at the same time. If you have four kids, then I would buy around 2 bags of each, etc.

TEACHER TIP – If you plan to bring this activity into a classroom, ensure you are following the school’s policy regarding activities that involve food.

Before You Begin

Use a food-safe marker to draw ghost faces on the marshmallows. This is an excellent activity for a child to do.

How To Play The Marshmallow Ghost Game

You can make any rules for this STEAM challenge. For these towers, the kids had to alternate rows of pumpkins and ghost marshmallows. Each row has 4 large jumbo popsicle sticks between each layer.

Other Ideas

  • ONLY USE PUMPKINS – have children estimate if only ghosts or pumpkins are easier.
  • SET A TIMER – See who can build the largest tower against the clock!
  • TRY DIFFERENT NUMBERS – instead of 4 of each item, try a triangle to see if that is easier.
  • ADD OTHER ITEMS – my children even wanted to see if somehow they could balance candy corn and other things on their towers.
