We have been searching for the perfect real snow globe, but we couldn’t find one. Therefore, we decided to make our waterless snow globe craft. The kids absolutely love the creative craft.

Why You Will Love This Craft

  • KID FRIENDLY – These examples were made by 5 and 7-year-olds.
  • EASILY CHANGE SUBJECT MATTER– Your child or student can choose what sculpture they want to build for the inside.
  • CAN MODIFY SUPPLIES – Any sculpture building material can be used.

Notes About Supplies

  • We found that the easiest material to work with was Model Magic. You can buy color Model Magic or use watercolor paint once it dries (like the Christmas tree snow globe)
  • The snowman snow globe was made from leftover modeling clay from making DIY clay magnets. This material is a little harder for young hands to work with and more expensive.
  • We loved using an extra sparkle spray coat on the Christmas tree for a little extra sparkle.
  • The Dollar Store has fake snow, but our sparkling pom poms also worked well.

Where To Buy Empty Snow Globes

Note that these are usually in stock around the holidays. You can also reuse baby food jars or clear containers to make DIY snow globes.

How To Make A DIY Snow Globe

Before You Begin

Children need to create a sketch or decide what they want to sculpt before building with your sculpture material.

Step 1: Build Your Sculpture

Using Model Magic, create a sculpture, like this Christmas tree, that will fit inside the globe.

ART TEACHER TIP – As children build, check that their sculptures will fit inside the globe. Double-check this at the end of the building before letting it dry.

Step 2: Let The Sculpture Dry or Bake It

For Model Magic, you can just let it dry overnight. If you are using oven-baked clay, you must follow the instructions to cook the sculpture properly.

Step 3: Paint

We love using watercolor paint and a small brush to paint Model Magic. Once the sculpture is painted, let the paint fully dry.

Optional: Spray A Clear Coat

We wanted our Christmas tree to have extra sparkle, so we took it outside and applied two coats of this spray Mod Podge sealer.

Step 4: Glue On The Base

Hot glue has seemed to work well for the Model Magic tree. However, we had to reglue the polymer clay snowman with super glue once the globe was shaken too many times!

Step 5: Add Snow or Pom Poms

Let the child decide how many small pom poms to add to the globe. Our sparkly ones worked well; you can get fake snow or small pom poms. We think that the smaller the pom poms, the better.

NOTE: We did not put liquid in these. Model Magic, pom poms, etc., would not hold up to that, nor would a 5-year-old boy shaking it all the time work out well.

Tips

  • Model Magic can be fragile. If something breaks off, you can put it back together using regular glue.
  • You can also pre-color the Model Magic with washable markers before sculpting.
  • If using Model Magic, a simple sculpture will be better than something with many small details that could break.
  • If you are looking to make an actual snow globe, you would need to use glycerin. The polymer clay should work for the sculpture building, not the Model Magic.

Craft FAQs

One of the cons of Model Magic is that it can easily break. However, the plastic snow globe protects the sculpture. It is so easy for kids to work that it makes it the perfect sculpture material for this craft.

We tried to use ripped cotton balls for the snow, but it did not work well. The cotton stuck together and didn’t move around the globe like the pom poms.

The kids just love how fun this snow globe craft turned out. We can’t wait to display them every year.
